Summary

The Geneva Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) is committed to the elimination of anti-personnel mines and to the reduction of the humanitarian impact of landmines and other explosive remnants of war. The GICHD is currently working in over 60 countries worldwide.

The Department of Geography at the University of Kansas (KU) has partnered with the GICHD to help realize this goal. The role of the KU team is varied and has included everything from sharing our mapping and geographic expertise at training sessions (Geneva, Switzerland; Murten, Switzerland; and Avignon, France) to field testing survey equipment in a variety of conditions and terrains (Albania, Chile, Ecuador, and Lebanon) as well as the major projects listed below. We anticipate that our involvement in humanitarian demining will continue to evolve and deepen.

More information on the project can be found at the KARS demining project page.
